JOSE “Chegui” TORRES

If you are looking for a word to describe former light heavyweight champion of the world, Jose Torres, versatile comes to mind. Jose began his boxing career while serving in the United States Army in the mid 1950’s. After winning the All Army and All Service Titles, he was selected to represent the United States as a light middleweight on the 1956 U.S. Olympic Team, in Melbourne, Australia. he fought well in the games and made it to the final fight, where he lost a one point decision to future great Lazlo Papp. Torres settled for the Silver Medal.

After the Olympics, Jose caught the watchful eye of legendary trainer Cus D’Amato. Under D’amato’s tutelage, Jose won both the national Golden Gloves and the National A.A.U. tournaments in 1958. Shortly after, he turned pro. On March 30, 1965 Jose reached the top by winning the Light Heavyweight Championship of the World, stopping Willie Pastrano in nine rounds, at New York’s Madison Square Garden. In all, Jose finished his great career with a record of 41-3-1 with 29 K.O.’s.

Jose then turned his talents to writing. He penned countless articles and authored a pair of books, including the top selling Mike Tyson story, “Fire and Fear.” During the mid 1980’s, he began another chapter in his boxing life by serving as the Athletic Commissioner of the State of New York. Jose continues to live in New York where he enjoys time with his beloved wife Ramona, and family, and continues to serve as a role model for young athlets.
